NL: Top 50 Horeca 2009 - Front Runner Extends the Lead

The Horeca top 100, which ranks the top-selling companies/brands in the Netherlands, achieved a total turnover of some half a billion euros in 2009. The front runner, McDonald’s, managed to extend the lead it had established last year, recording an increase of 5.5% to V558 m (previous year V529 m) with 221 outlets.

In 2008, the world’s market leader had, for the first time, pushed its major competitor in the Netherlands, Van der Valk, into second place. But it is important to bear in mind that the Dutch Horeca list does not rank sales in the foodservice segment alone, but includes also the figures for accommodation revenue. And the hotel industry in the Netherlands did not have an easy ride in 2009 – on the contrary, many companies/brands had to swallow a percentage drop in receipts which went well into double figures. So, for example, the Hotel De l’Europe in Amsterdam had to endure a decrease in revenues of at least 48% and plummeted from 66th place in 2008 to 86th place. Starwood Hotels & Resorts lost a good 32%, the bankrupted Golden Tulip hotel chain suffered a drop in turnover of 57% and slipped from 3rd to 9th place. The most successful hotel company in the Netherlands was Van der Valk, recording a small increase from V513 m to 518 m.At V324 m (2008: 310 m), contract caterer Servex, who specialise in transport locations, grew by close on 5% and, as a result, ranked among the top 3 for the first time.
