Cosy Café with a Practical Touch

The Laundromat Café opened its doors in Copenhagen's Elmegade street in August 2004. The idea of the founders (four men from Iceland) was to create a place where people could do theirlaundry at the same time as hang out in a cosy café with a practical touch. Wireless internet access, games such as chess, yatzi and backgammon, as well as 4,000 books (second hand, for sale) and a wide range of magazines, are provided to entertain guests while they wait for their laundry to finish. Furthermore, the Laundromat Café serves fresh, homemade food from breakfast to dinner, while young designers have the chance to exhibit their work in showcases on the walls. From Monday to Friday, guests can choose between ‘clean' (vegetarian) and ‘dirty‘ (with sausages) breakfast options (DKK 85). Brunch is offered on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. During the day, salads, sandwiches and burgers have proven to be particularly popular among launderers. The menu is influenced by the founders' Icelandic origins as well as Mediterranean and American cuisines. The beverages list features more than 20 different coffee specialties plus teas, beer, wine, and cocktails. The décor is mostly held in red, beige and brown with cowhide on barstools. In the laundry area, there are four environmentally-friendly washing machines and dryers. In August 2006, a second unit was opened in Østerbro, Arhusgade. By the way: the Laundromat Café has had its own fan club on Facebook since 2007 with more than 350 members to date.
