Okko, the first ‘gourmet market’ in Turkey, was established in 1988 in Kozyatagi, a small neighbourhood of Istanbul. In those days it was only a small butcher’s shop selling very high-quality meat and poultry. As more people became fans of the concept, owner Muhsin Okuyucu added charcuterie and bakery sections. When opening the third outlet, a wine cellar with a wide-variety of wines was included – a milestone in the history of Turkish shop design. This year, a fourth unit was launched in the Astoria shopping mall, located in the financial heart of Istanbul. It now features a 160-seat dining area whilst the size of the counters has been doubled or even tripled. The result is a 1,200 sq m, self-service, gourmet shop containing almost every kind of food you can think of: from all kinds of bakery items to fresh fruitjuice mixes; from cheeses to charcuterie, grilled fish and marinated seafood. Beverages include gourmet beers as well as wines from all around the world. All kinds of packaged goods are ready to take away. A typical lunch consists of French chicken fricassee, a glass of Chilean wine and a slice of authentic Apfelstrudel at €15 al - together. Budget-priced menus for €6 are also available.
