For Areas, a subsidiary of the French Elior company, a modern service area meansgiving travellers the chance to take a stylish and pleasurable break, individual flexibility and an atmospheric setting that is not, as so often, characterised by interchangeabilitybut by unforgettable individuality.
The new policy was launched in 2006 with a million euro, future-oriented pilot project on the motorway near Castellbisbal, 15 km from Barcelona. Here, where the Medas café-restaurant concept has been providing sustenance for truck and car drivers since 1976, everythingnow appears in a new light – literally – because the façade and roof (!) aremade entirely of glass. Divided into free flow and eating areas, the interior designradiates quality while high-grade wood furnishings increase the feeling of well-being. Capable of accommodating 180 guests, the complex encompasses a café andrestaurant operating on the free-flow system. The various F&B modules offer dishesthat vary according to the time of day and season. Everything is aimed at maximumflexibility – for the operator, too. The bestsellers are sandwiches and meat from thegrill. The average bill amounts to €12.
With 663 sites in 2006, Areas is Spain’s leadingtransport-catering company and, with a portfolio spanning over 20 gastronomicbrands, the company currently operates around 20 Medas establishments on thecountry’s motorways and at airports.
