Popular Beer from the Neighbouring City

Rivalry between the two Rhineland major cities of Düsseldorf and Cologne is not limited to carnival and football. Above all, the cities are proud of their local brewing traditions, which are an advertisement for both the city and its residents. In Düsseldorf, they have always drunk the ‘Alt', Cologne beer is called ‘Kölsch'. Therefore, the degree of scepticism among Düsseldorfers was correspondingly high when Malte Wienbreyer, Jürgen Köster and Jörn Klingenheben announced that, through their collaborative Eigelstein project in Düsseldorf's trendy ‘Medienhafen', Kölsch from the Gaffel brewery would flow through their taps instead of Alt.

Their beerbased concept is a modern, contemporary, timeless brewery - feminine yet rustic, no-frills and full of joie de vivre. 500 sq m of which 348 sq m are devoted to dining, with flexible seating available for up to 350, located on a corner plot with high windows on two sides. Revenues: approx. 2.5 m net per annum. The Eigelstein is currently one of the Gaffel brewery's top three customers posting annual sales of 1,500 hl. Women, in particular, prefer to drink Kölsch which comes in small glasses and wherever large numbers of women go, men will automatically follow - this is their formula for success. Traditional German cuisine is also indispensable to the brewery concept. Cutlets and a 40-cm-long brewery sausage are particularly popular.
