Reaching New Horizons

At the highest station in Hochgurgl’s Top Wurmkogel ski region, visitors experience pure exhilaration and sensational views over the Ötztal Alps. At 3,080 m, the Top Mountain Star bar, which opened in 2006, soars into the heavens with a viewing platform and futuristic panorama bar. Guests can enjoy the exclusivity of the landscape and culinary delicacies in equal measure from the 50 seats on offer. The 1.5 m thick, concrete corona sits on the rock like the crown on a tooth, secured by 25 rock bolts, with an average length of eight metres. A 120 sq m spherical panorama turret, with a wrap-around glass facade, which slides open in fine weather, is enthroned on top of it. Pared down to the essentials, the structure, made of three materials metal, wood and glass, is the work of Munich architect Prof. Peter Schmuck. From the circular gallery, one can follow the 360° panorama step by step. Here, Swarovski crystals try as hard as they can to out-sparkle the snow crystals. Inside, at the ‘Sternenbar’, where the drinks start to sparkle if placed on one of the beams of lights emitted by the twelve signs of the zodiac recessed in the timber bar top, one can sit quietly and listen to classical and meditation music. The Top Mountain Star is also available to hire for unforgettable pinnacle parties for up to 90 guests. The bar is part of the portfolio of the Scheiber family, who run the five-star TOP hotel in Hochgurgl.
