Something for Everyone

With almost 1,000 sq m of space on three floors in the best store location on the Mariahilfer Straße retail strip, the Freiraum, which opened in autumn 2008, has to be one of the biggest restaurants in Vienna. And Wolfgang Jappel (Restaurant Rochus) similarly expects big things of this concept. The café (30 seats), sofa lounge (55), cocktail bar (70), conservatory (50) and restaurant (100) offer sufficient scope for any time of the day, any target group, any budget and any taste. The creative cuisine ranges from the traditional to the modern from Thailand via the USA back home to Austria. The breakfast menu, which is served until midnight, is outstanding: eggs prepared in nine different ways, plus pancakes, sausages, waffles, muesli, homemade bread from the wood-fired oven and three own coffee roasts. The pizza range (€6.50-12.50) is creative too, with burrata, fig and honey, piemento, chorizo and rosemary for the topping. Imaginative creations like ‘seared tuna steak with Thai asparagus, Wasabi puree and Maracuja’ are prepared on a Japanese Robata grill. The cocktail menu, comprising 200 items, has created a stir in Vienna’s restaurant scene, with 100 types of vodka from Russia, Poland, Mexico and Mongolia and Cuban rum at €2,800 for 50 ml (!). In the wine cellar: 24 types of champagne alone plus 300 different wines.
